I felt cold and the sky wept.

Only it didn’t rain on me.  I didn’t hear the thunder.  I could look out at the city in the distance and see clouds pulled down with the weight of rain, like hands reaching out to swallow the city.  The hard thing about driving home is that the sun is always behind me, setting, disappearing.  I’m left driving into darkness.

Pedro the Lion played through the speakers and drowned out the traffic with sadness and cynicism.  Earlier in the day we had driven four levels deep beneath the street, and when we got out of the car our words fell out of our mouths dead to the ground, the air was so thick.  I kicked them around the floor of the parking garage and felt alone inside all that stillness.

It was dark by the time I got off the freeway and headed north.  The traffic was thick and in front of me was a Landcruiser with a for sale sign in the back window.  The license plate said WNDRL5T, and it didn’t seem fair that they could be so cavalier about all the adventures they might be selling in that exchange.  Wanderlust.  And I tried to picture the places that car had been, the roads it has traveled and will travel when those new owners come around.  It was a punch in the gut at a time like this, stuck in traffic alone in your car.

A whiff of something came through my open window and suddenly I longed for the smell of the sea.  When I got home the whiff was long gone but that smell stays with you the way good smells should.  The way memories won’t let you go even when you can’t breathe.

And so you hold your breath, because it’s better than letting that memory get away.

Beautifully captured moments. The type of writing I love. The type of photographs I hate, when they’re not mine…
